The following is a running list of users in the Pharmacy OneSource Community that we designate as Community Experts. These will usually be presenters from our Webinar Wednesdays series who have agreed to answer questions posted for a period of time. Deb Saine is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On June 30, 2010, Deb presented "Build Your Med Safety Pyramid: The Pharmacist's Role in Medication Safety."


Deb is the Medication Safety Manager for Winchester Medical Center, Valley Health System, in Winchester, Virginia. She earned her B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Toledo, and her M.S. in Organizational Leadership and Management from Antioch University. Saine’s career has focused on leadership in medication safety and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. She has authored numerous publications and has presented internationally on the topic of medication safety. She is active with ASHP, serving as Chair of the Council on Pharmacy Practice, and is Past-Chair of the ASHP Medication Safety Section Advisory Group.


She has been Chair of the ASHP Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners and is a Past-President of the New Hampshire Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Saine also served as a member and Vice-Chair of Premier’s national Pharmacy Medication Management Subcommittee.

Kirsten Pyle-Springer is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On July 28, 2010, Kirsten presented "Sepsis Management: The Latest Evidence-Based Practice."

 

Kirsten Pyle-Springer has spent her 27-year nursing career devoted to critical care and performance improvement.  Kirsten is currently working in the Surgical/Neuro/Trauma ICU at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California where she splits her time between the bedside and outcomes management, where she is the Sepsis Coordinator.
Kirsten has been extensively involved in Critical Care related education, locally and nationally since 1988 and has been a critical care consultant since 2003. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the Greater Long Beach and Orange County chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and has several national advisory board appointments.  

Kirsten has authored several nursing journal articles, and has had multiple publications presented nationally, including the Congress for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the National Teaching Institute, the Emergency Nursing Association Conference and the American College of Chest Physicians Congress. Kirsten’s teams have received many awards, the most recent being the 2008 JCAHO Codman Award for “Outstanding use of outcomes data for performance improvement.”

Sam Calabrese is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On August 11, 2010, Sam presented "Using Data and Technology to Improve and Monitor Medication Turnaround Times."

 

Sam Calabrese R.Ph., MBA is the Director of Inpatient Pharmacy Services at The Cleveland Clinic, a thirteen hundred bed hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been with the Cleveland Clinic for over thirteen years, where he has filled various leadership positions before becoming Director. He is currently the immediate past president of The Ohio Society of Health System Pharmacist and serves as active in ASHP as a delegate for Ohio.

Betsy McCaughey is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On August 11, 2010, Betsy presented "New Research on Preventing Hospital Infection."

Dr. Betsy McCaughey is a health policy expert and former Lt. Governor of New York State. In 2004, she founded the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (www.hospitalinfection.org), a nationwide educational campaign to stop hospital-acquired infections. She serves as the CEO and Chairman of the organization. In three years, RID has made hospital infections a major public issue, provided compelling evidence that preventing infection improves hospital profitability as well as saving lives, and won legislation in over 20 states for public reporting of infection rates. RID has become synonymous with patient safety and clean hospital care.

Dr. McCaughey's research on how to prevent infection deaths has been featured on Good Morning America, the CBS Morning Show, ABC's 20/20, and many other national programs. She has appeared on Fox News Network's Hannity & Colmes, The O'Reilly Factor, CNN's Talk Back Live, and numerous radio programs.

Hayley Burgess is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On August 25, Hayley presented "Exploring the Implementation of NQF-Endorsed Safe Practice 18: Pharmacist Leadership Structures and Systems."

Dr. Hayley Burgess is the Director of Performance Improvement, Measures, Standards, and Practices for the Texas Medical Institute of Technology (TMIT).  As the team leader at TMIT, Burgess coordinates the updates to the National Quality Forum (NQF) Safe Practices for Better Healthcare.  She also plays an instrumental role in the development and management of the Leapfrog Safe Practices Program supported by TMIT.  Burgess was previously Director of Medication Use and Safety for the HCA Corporate Clinical Services Group where she created and implemented patient safety programs and initiatives for approximately 170 hospitals and 80 outpatient surgery centers owned or operated by the Hospital Corporation of America.  

Her most recent research involvement was as the co-investigator for a 60 hospital collaborative to improve critical care services and prevent healthcare associated infections, funded by AHRQ and in partnership with Vanderbilt University.  Burgess received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.  She completed a post-doctoral residency and clinical science research fellowship in pharmacoeconomic psychopharmacology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Darin Smith is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On September 15, Darin presented "Opportunities for Improving Core Measure Performance Through Pharmacist Intevention."

Darin Smith serves as Director of Pharmacy Services and Performance Improvement for Norman Regional Health System where he has been employed since 1994. Prior to Norman Regional, he completed his training at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy where he earned a B.S. in Pharmacy  and a Doctor of Pharmacy. He completed a Specialty Residency in Pharmacokinetics and is Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy. 

Dr. Smith is active with the Oklahoma Society of Health-System Pharmacists, serving as President in 1988-89, and state delegate to the ASHP House of Delegates for multiple terms. He was awarded the Oklahoma Health-System Pharmacists of the Year in 2001 by OSHP and the Quality Professional Award by the Oklahoma Hospital Association in 2004 for his accomplishments and contributions in the area of quality improvement. Dr. Smith serves on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, Oklahoma’s Quality Improvement Organization and on the Oklahoma Hospital Association Council on Quality and Patient Safety.

Jim Jorgenson is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On November 10, 2010, Jim presented "Controlled Substance Diversion: Tales from the Front."

 

Jim Jorgenson is currently the Chief Pharmacy Officer and Vice President of Clarian Health in Indianapolis. As Chief Pharmacy Officer, Jorgenson's responsibilities include the direction and leadership for all Clarian pharmacy programs.  Inpatient services provide direct pharmacy care for 17 hospitals and ambulatory programs statewide. He has served on editorial and advisory boards for health care providers and industry.  He has also been an active member of ASHP, serving on the ASHP Goals Committee, the Commission on Credentialing and the Councils for Legal and Public Affairs and Administrative Affairs and in numerous state affiliated chapter positions.  Jorgenson has authored over 30 publications and has provided over 100 invited presentations both nationally and internationally.

Dottie Borton is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On November 10, 2010, Dottie presented "Positive Deviance: Another Tool for Infection Prevention."

 

Dottie Borton is an Infection Preventionist at Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, Philadelphia, PA with more than 35 years experience in infection prevention and control in variety of healthcare settings (acute care, long term care, behavioral health, and outpatient). She is certified in Infection Control. She is a member of APIC and is active in Philadelphia - Delaware Valley Chapter 15 of APIC.  She has served as president, secretary, education chair, and member of board of Chapter 15. Borton has lectured and presented posters and workshops on infection prevention and control topics at local, national, and international venues. She is currently serving on HAI Advisory Panel for the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority.

Michelle Thoma is now an expert in the Pharmacy OneSource Community. On November 17, Michelle presented "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day: Current and Future Challenges with Medication Reconciliation."

 

Michelle Thoma, RPh, PharmD is Pharmacy Manager, Patient Care Services, Compliance and Quality Improvement at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, and Clinical Instructor with the UW School of Pharmacy. Michelle received her Bachelors and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is responsible for managing patient care pharmacy services on the inpatient transplant, surgery and neurosciences care units, for leading ambulatory clinic pharmacist practice, and for coordinating department and organization wide regulatory compliance and quality improvement initiatives. Michelle is an active member of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Mental Health Drug Advisory Board and the University Health System Consortium's Pharmacy Performance Improvement & Compliance Committee.
