What is the best way to dispose of substances that fit 1 of the characteristic waste' categories such as corrosive or flammable? They do not fall necessarily in the 'P-waste' or 'U-waste' listing.

Thank you

Good question.  We had a webinar on this topic back in May, here is a link http://forums.pharmacyonesource.com/t5/Webinar-Blog/On-Demand-Webinar-Hazardous-Drugs-Managing-Them-...

I'll also pass on your question to the two speakers who presented it.

All pharmaceutical waste that meets any of the characteristic waste definitions need to be identified, segregated, and managed as hazardous waste. If the characteristic is either for ignitability (D001) due to alcohol or flashpoint, or for toxicity (specific D code depending on the chemical), these can be combined with the P and U listed waste under the shipping description: UN3248, Waste Medicine, Liquid, Flammable,Toxic, n.o.s., 3 (6.1), PG II

The exceptions which must be segregated and packaged separately are:

      1. pressurized aerosols (D001) (with or without flammable propellants),

      2. oxidizers (also D001),

      3. acids(D002),

      4. and bases (D002).

Since nitroglycerin is too weak in finished dosage forms to react, reactivity should not be an issue. To review the exact definitions of characteristics hazardous wastes, go to http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=2b8f7eacd5e4163c11945f8a22d5ada4&rgn=div6&v...

In addition to P and U listed waste, corrosive and flammable wastes are classified as D listed waste, need to be segregated and your vendor for P and U listed waste can properly dispose of this waste for you.  I have attached a couple of resources for your review.
