I do not know of any specific recommendations for the percent of sodium thiousulfate to use as a deactivator/neutralizing agent either.  However, we do use the 1% sodium thiosulfate concentration from the original Surface Safe® prep.

May I ask where you found the product?

We are trying to find a replacement product for Surface Safe, too - I visited LSS and Fischersci's websites and couldn't find these wipes anywhere. Would you mind replying with what the new products are called? Thanks! Molly

You can also make your own surface safe replacement solution.  I have enclosed the ingredients.  We use the soltuions with sprayer bottles and give it a month expiration.

Sorry to have caused confusion.  The only wipe we have found is the sodium hypochlorite part.  We have only found the sodium thiosulfate component as at 1.5% stock solution (not a wipe).  We are currently trying to research whether or not it is okay to use the 1.5% sodium thiosulfate vs. the 1% that was in the SurfaceSafe.

Here is the ordering info for what we have found so far.

Cardinal Health (Materiel Management)- sodium hypochlorite wipe Cat no. A9495-5 MFR part no.9103

 AND 1.5% sodium thiosulfate is LSS-Item #: 146635

Is there any data on what the optimal % of sodium hypochlorite is needed to decontaminate chemotherapy?  Is 0.5% enough or do you need at least 2% as was in Surface safe?

KO, There is no universal agent to decominate/inactivate chemo drugs. Within this thread are resources that need to sought out and reviewed. Based on the literature that I have reviewed, 2% sodium hypochlorite is required.

We started using a 2% sodium hypochlorite solution that is available at target, then using a diluted solution of sodium thiosulfate as the second step.  We compound the sodium thiosulfate using the IV preparation.

If the step following the sodium hypochlorite is to remove the hypochlorite from the surface to avoid pitting as well as decontamination,  does it need to be Na thiosulfate?  Contec Inc makes a 0.5% hydrogen peroxide product (Accel TB) that is available as a wipe, pour bottle, or spray bottle.  Could this be substituted?

Thanks.
