With the National shortage of electrolytes affecting us all, I have a question. We have several vials of Potassium Phosphate that were compounded by a compounding pharmacy with an expiration date of today. Can we use the contents of that vial, add it to a diluents, and give it the standard 9-14 day expiration?

I also would NOT condone that practice. The compounding companies usually do sterility and stability analyses. The use of expired medicines must only be done with the support of scientific evidence demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of the product past its expiration date.
We have been managing the shortages by consistent and daily communications with the practitioners. If we do not have a product, we eliminate it from prescribing.
Good luck to us all during this time of excess shortages.
